Summary on Continuous Murmurs

Learn about continuous murmurs which begin in systole, peak near the second heart sound (S2), and continue into part or all of diastole.

Overview

Continuous murmurs begin in systole, peak near the second heart sound (S2), and continue into part or all of diastole. Continuous murmurs can be classified as either physiological (no structural abnormality) or pathological, where blood is being shunted from a high-pressure system to a low-pressure system throughout the cardiac cycle. A differential diagnosis can be made depending on the location and the characteristics of the continuous murmur.
